Looking to become a qualified driving instructor? Moon Driving School offers professional ADI training delivered by an experienced Grade A Driving Instructor Trainer who holds the prestigious ORDIT qualification — the government-approved register of driving instructor trainers.
With over 25 years of training experience, you’ll receive expert guidance and support at every stage of your journey to becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
Requirements to Start Training
Before beginning your training, you must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years
- Be able to read a number plate from 90 feet (27.5 metres) — glasses or contact lenses are acceptable
- Have no more than 6 penalty points on your driving licence
- Be willing to apply for a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
The Training Process
1. ADI Part 1 — Theory Test
Study and pass the Approved Driving Instructor Theory Test, covering driving theory and the Highway Code at an advanced level.
2. ADI Part 2 — Driving Ability Test
A practical driving test assessing your own driving to an advanced standard. Includes an eyesight test, Show Me/Tell Me vehicle safety questions, general driving ability, manoeuvres and independent driving. Duration: approximately 1 hour.
3. Practical Teaching Experience
Develop your instructional skills through supervised training and practice sessions with our Grade A ORDIT trainer.
4. ADI Part 3 — Instructional Ability Test
Demonstrate your ability to teach learner drivers effectively and safely to DVSA standards.
5. Register and Begin Your Career
Once qualified, register with the DVSA and start your career as a professional Approved Driving Instructor.
How to Apply
Once you meet the requirements above, you’ll need to submit your application through the official government website (https://www.gov.uk/apply-to-become-a-driving-instructor). After your application is processed and you receive your PRN (Personal Reference Number), you can begin your instructor training with us.
