The Basic Difference
A manual car uses a clutch pedal and gear stick. You control gear changes yourself as you accelerate, decelerate and come to a stop. Learning to drive manual requires you to coordinate three pedals, the gear stick, the steering wheel and your road awareness simultaneously — particularly demanding in the early stages.
An automatic car changes gears for you. There is no clutch, and you simply select drive and focus on steering, speed and the road ahead. The learning curve is significantly shallower for most people.
The Licence Implications — The Most Important Factor
If you pass your test in a manual car, your licence covers you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. Maximum flexibility.
If you pass in an automatic car, your licence is restricted to automatic vehicles only. You cannot legally drive a manual car without re-taking your test. This is perfectly fine if you never intend to drive manual — but it is worth thinking about carefully before you commit.
When Manual Lessons Make Sense
Manual lessons are the better choice if:
- You want maximum flexibility from your licence
- You plan to drive a variety of cars in the future
- You will be renting cars abroad (manual is far more common outside the US and Australia)
- You are not in a rush and are happy to take a little longer to reach test standard

When Automatic Lessons Make Sense
Automatic lessons are the better choice if:
- You have struggled with manual driving — clutch control, hill starts or stalling
- You are a nervous driver and want to focus entirely on the road
- You have a physical condition that makes operating a clutch difficult
- You already own or drive an automatic vehicle
- You want to pass more quickly and the licence restriction does not concern you
Many learners find automatic lessons significantly less stressful, which often means faster progress and better performance under test pressure.

Is One Harder to Pass In?
The DVSA practical test criteria are identical for both. The examiner assesses observation, road positioning, speed management, junction technique and manoeuvres — none of which differ between manual and automatic tests.
What differs is what can go wrong. In a manual car, stalling, clutch control errors or missed gears can result in faults. In an automatic, those specific risks are removed — but the standard of driving required is exactly the same.
